	This garden was a challenge in all the best ways - steep unruly levels, towering Scots Pines that give incredible scale and drama,&#38;nbsp; and a sandy shallow soil that runs down to the coast. The garden we began with was a hotch-potch of materials and rotten decking, with an incongruous collection of plants. We needed to bring coherence to the space, make it work for living outdoors, but without infringing on its inherent character and charm.&#38;nbsp;First we had to carve out usable spaces - we created a series of decks with more generous proportions that hugged the hillside rather that protruded and created comfortable spaces for seating and a hot tub. Others are tucked into the garden creating destinations to discover.&#38;nbsp;

Custom poured slabs of etched concrete float across the garden, creating stepping stones through the woodland.&#38;nbsp;

	The paving tiptoes through the garden, creating pathways down the hillside and leading to hidden covered decks and at the far end a boules court with views across the valley, a sunny spot to while away an afternoon. Boulders shore up the slopes and provide stepping stones for the more adventurous.
With our trees already there, we created an understory of shade loving plants, taking inspiration from New Zealand and Australia. Tree ferns, grasses and phormiums provide structure and texture, lovely&#38;nbsp;Leptospermum (the tea-tree plant) creates a shrubby layer and hit of bruised pink.&#38;nbsp;On the terrace, basking in sunshine, the planting leans towards a desert climes - Agaves and Knipofia sit alongside glacus blue Festucas.This garden was completed in April 2025.

	On meeting this garden, it was large, unloved and over-grown on an awkward diagonal slope. But despite the challenges, it had lots of life lurking - a bevy of beautiful trees around which the whole design would come to be orientated, scale that allowed for zones and microclimates, ball sports and dens, terraces and even a full size trampoline.
The first challenge was how to manage the slope - with no rear access and reluctant to ferry soil off site, we created a large sculptural ribbon of steel that carved level terraces out of the slope, grading the topsoil into lawns and beds. The steel was also used to soften the levels between the house and garden in a series of south facing terraces which were then planted with sun-loving Mediterranean plants.&#38;nbsp;

Established trees became anchors, around which the design pivoted

	A beautiful Acer palmatum became a spot height but also set the tone and palette for the dappled woodland palette - lime greens and deep purples jostle with delicate umbrels of Cenolophium denudatum and the swoosh of Hakonechloa macra.&#38;nbsp;A new Ptelea trifoliata signals the entrance into the lower garden, a perfect mid-height tree to bring the more established planting into scale. The second lawn is designed for kicking balls and cartwheels, with a custom cantilvered bench for lucky spectators.&#38;nbsp;And for those that venture further still into the garden, you reach a woodland den, complete with treehouse, treetop walkway and slides, plus a discreetly hidden trampoline. For budding entomologists, there are rocks and logs galore among the hostas, ferns and boehmerias where bugs and insects hide.&#38;nbsp;We are delighted to see this garden start a new chapter. With special thanks to London Hardscapes for their brilliant work in building this garden through a long and very wet winter.&#38;nbsp;

	An Old Rectory in Somerset with a two-acre garden
 on an awkward slope that made it hard to enjoy. 
A full redesign of the garden, orchard and meadow
 has created a series of inter-locking spaces that link 
and connect, creating a journey around the garden. 

Inspired by art-deco shapes beloved of the client, 
curves meet lines to form a series of terraces that 
have broken up the slope into different areas for 
eating, cooking and enjoying the incredible views.Locally sourced White Lias stone has been used in
 a variety of finishes to create a sense of place and 
connect the garden to the house. Tea-stained steel
 is used to retain wall and a simple trough-style water
 feature adds movement to the dining terrace.Beyond the terrace, a new pollinator friendly meadow 
has been created underplanted with thousands of bulbs
 to give a procession of colour and interest.

	A new fruit and nut orchard and a woodland walk provides another habitat and opportunity for a different 
palette of plants. 

Around the pool, deep planting beds have been added and jumbo planters to house a palette of plants that evoke long lazy summer days - figs, euphorbia mellifera and yucca - creating a wonderful textural green backdrop.
 Custom hardwood daybeds designed by Studio Bizley and Hay Pallisade sun loungers make it the only place you’d want to be on a sunny day.&#38;nbsp;
